Improve the Efficiency of Your Home Heating System
Heating your home can be expensive. You can reduce that expense by improving your insulation, adding landscaping features that provide shade, upgrading your windows and making sure your have a properly sized and working heating system.
Here are a few simple things you can do to improve your heating efficiency:
- Seal gaps: stop drafts and heat loss by sealing leaks with caulk, non-expanding insulating foam and weather stripping. Usual offenders can be found around windows, doors, electrical outlets, recessesd lighting, gaps at the edges of drywall and openings around plumbing lines entering the house.
- Clean registers and baseboards: remove the covers and vacuum dirt and debris out of the chambers before each heating season.
- Replace furnace filter: replace your filter every month. A dirty filter makes your furnace work harder and less efficiently.
- Install a programmable thermostat: by lowering the temperature for times when you are sleeping or not at home, you can save on heating costs.
- Adjust the dampers: open them wide in the coldest rooms and partially close them in the warmest rooms. Balancing the heat throughout the house will keep everyone more comfortable.
